Shrubs, small trees or climbers. Leaves opposite; blades usually simple; margins entire to serrate (rarely pinnately lobed). Inflorescence terminal, panicles with numerous small flowers in the centre and a few coloured flowers around the outside. Fruit a capsule dehiscent from the top, with numerous tiny seeds. Derivation of name: from the Greek - water vessel, referring to the shape of the capsule Worldwide: 23 species in eastern Asia and North America. Rwanda: 1 cultivated taxon. |
