Herbaceous or woody climbers. Leaves petiolate, entire or lobed; base often cordate. Flowers in dense axillary cymes. Sepals 5. Corolla urceolate, constricted at apex of the tube; limb shortly 5-lobed. Stamens borne low down in the corolla tube, widened basally into large concave scales, arching over the ovary. Ovary 2-locular. Style 1; stigmas 2 or 1 2-lobed. Capsule 4-valved or almost indehiscent. Derivation of name: from Greek, lepis a scale and stemon a stamen, refrring to the scale-like stamens. Worldwide: 10 species in the Old World tropics Rwanda: 1 taxon. |
